The Peaks Of Otter Cameo   

This unique piece of heirloom-quality jewelry has become as popular as the Peaks of Otter themselves. Several years ago, Mr. Lyons had the vision to create a distinctive piece of jewelry; a piece that captured the natural beauty and essence of the area of Virginia in which he grew up; a piece to exemplify the depth of imagination found only in the rolling hills and creek beds he'd explored as a boy. He knew immediately that the Peaks of Otter symbolized every characteristic he had come to love about central and southwest Virginia, but what canvas could be used to portray this natural majesty? What form of jewelry could convey that extraordinary natural depth to equal the distinction of the Peaks of Otter?

His search led him to encounter a relatively forgotten style of jewelry--the cameo. It was the ideal form in which to express the natural splendor he intended. However, creating a cameo

was a trade so unique only a handful of craftsmen in the world possess it. Mr. Lyons knew that the cameo would express the magnificent shading and texture he needed to demonstrate the wonder of the Peaks. 

For two years he searched for a craftsman that would be able to produce this piece. And finally he found a craftsman in Germany, who could provide the detail Mr. Lyons expected and capture the true beauty of the Peaks of Otter. 

Each Peaks of Otter cameo is carved from a layered black and white onyx. This intricate process ensures that each one is individual and unique. The back of the cameo is engraved with the phrase, "Peaks Of Otter, Virginia, By Lyons".  After the cameos have been carved, they are sent to the goldsmith in Italy who sets each cameo in either a 14 karat yellow gold frame, or a Sterling Silver frame. Then the cameos make their way home to Bedford, Virginia.
